Riding with Disabilities

3 Saddle Ranch specializes in horseback riding lessons for people with disabilities and horseback riding for therapeutic purposes. In therapeutic horseback riding, we use activities to achieve goals that enhance physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral and educational skills for people who have disabilities.

3 Saddle Ranch not only focuses on the therapeutic riding skills but also the development of a relationship between horse and rider. We use a team approach in order to provide treatment for the individual with the guidance of a riding instructor.

Horseback riding as a method of exercise provides unique body stimulation unlike almost any other exercise regimen for people with disabilities. Horseback riding creates a rhythmic motion that acts to move the rider's pelvis in the same rotation and side-to-side movement that would occur when walking. A horse’s gait constantly adjusts to the environment in which it is walking and creates a variance in motion that promote growth in a rider’s strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, and confidence.

And of course, you don’t have to get on a horse to enjoy or achieve the desired benefits of horseback riding. Merely being around a horse and interacting with it can be beneficial by giving those with disabilities a companion to care for. Grooming activities such as brushing, bathing, and currying promote range of motion and the relationship building can have a relaxing and calming effect.

Benefits of Therapeutic Horseback Riding:

  • Improved sitting/standing posture
  • Increase in self-efficacy and self-esteem
  • Heightened self-confidence
  • Enhanced physical skills and new muscle growth
  • Improved emotional, social, and cognitive skills
  • Promotes behavioral and educational growth
